I slept through my morning swim this morning. What a slacker. I’m really having trouble with 4:30am lately. We’re really not on friendly terms. Anyway, after work I headed over to Fort Boise to do a 7.5 mile trail run. A little number called “Wandering Frontrunner” (link below).

It’s a nice hilly route, but not too long or extreme for a weeknight run. I’d taken my headlamp just in case I ran out of daylight. The temperature was really nice, high 40s and overcast. However, as I gained the ridge above Fort Boise, there was a strong wind out of the north which cooled things off a little more.
There were only a few other runners out and one small pack of mountain bikers heading up for a night ride. I did ok on the climb up to the apex of the route at the junction of Three Bears and Shane’s Trail. I paused there to snap a pic of the city below, but it was on my Blackberry, which doesn’t do justice to the view. It looked amazing and was a nice place to be at that time of evening.

I headed down Shane’s to Central Ridge and onto Bucktail Trail. I had a bone to pick with Bucktail. Two Saturdays ago, I had my ass handed to me on our run and had to walk portions of Bucktail. This was particularly sad because Bucktail is a rolly, but relatively flat trail. There was no walking anything tonight, so I felt somewhat redeemed.
As I reached the far west end of the trail, I heard a sudden burst of gun fire. I very nearly pissed my pants before I realized that just downhill from that portion of the trail is a police firing range. I knew it was there, but I’ve never been around when it was in use. I really think my heart rate spiked to an unhealthy level for a minute!

I finished my run just before dark, so I didn’t need that headlamp afterall. Nice to see the days getting longer!
Now to make up my missed swim tomorrow morning when I otherwise woulda been sleeping in. As they say, play now, pay later…
