Yes, really getting going

Friday, September 4.  Do I have the big, explanatory, raison d’etre thing prepared?  No.  What’s going on with this blog?  Who’s Dave, and what about him is in decline?  Is that an ironic title?  Is Dave also Young Macomber?  Is there one good reason to keep reading?!?

All in good time, my pretties.  Somewhere, someplace, somehow.  What are you rebelling against?  You’ve made me the happiest spice in the world!

Ay.  I’m sorry that, due to a number of factors — lack of sleep, sick child home from school, just got back from the treadmill and am wiped — my decline and fall isn’t happening as quickly as I’d hoped.  The old version of me, with the inherent distractability, lack of focus, and unrepentant laziness, is hard to shake.  (Though not so hard I didn’t just spend an entire minute thinking up those [semi-]interesting turns of phrase.)

Results from this morning:

30 minutes on the treadmill — 2 minutes walking @ 7kph alternating with 2 minutes running @ 10.5 kph

4.6 kilometers covered

Today was the first time since I’ve started that I didn’t have shinsplints.  On Monday and on Wednesday I got not-terrible but not-exactly-mellow shinsplints, both times at around the 8-minute mark.  They went away by minute 14 or so.  Today I was waiting for them (the sneaks) but they didn’t come.  I’ll take that as progress.

I’ll also take as progress the fact that, with 2 minutes of running to go, I felt good enough to try a final push kind of thing.  I sped the treadmill up to 11.2 kph, and I felt like I was flying.  It’s a big step up in speed, but I held on for the 2 minutes.  It was all I could do to not throw my arms in the air at the end.  Yes!  Glory!  Etc etc.

If this keeps up, I might just be able to consider a 10K in a few months.  I might just also get around to covering the other things in my life that (which?) need improvement, and that I’ve given a lot of thought to in the last two months.  Tune in next week.
