OMG...it hurts...

…Not in a painful kind of hurt way, but in an exhausted, sore, tired kind of hurt way.  My training today called for a short 2 mile run.  Piece of cake.  I can do 2miles with my eyes closed now (which is more than I can say for two weeks ago), but yesterday, I got up close and personal with “The Wall,” and today, 2 miles was too much.

Yesterday was supposed to be a cross training day, but my trainer needed to reschedule.  Sprints rescheduled?  Yeah, ok!!!  Instead, I made yesterday a rest day (which was supposed to be today), because my body still hasn’t caught up from my first 5K last weekend.  It was just what the doctor ordered.  My body really hadn’t realized exactly the state of exhaustion it was in.  At first, I felt guilty about the rest day, but then the “uh, rest = lower chance of injury,” factor kicked in and the guilt vanished.

I woke up this morning feeling refreshed and ready to roll.  The stupid bruising from the side stitch was still there, but I can run through that if need be.  I don’t have enough time to run in the mornings on weekdays, so I run in the evening.  Tonight, Mike had to work, so we savored our time together and shared a meal before he had to leave.  An hour and a half later (plenty of time for digestion), I changed, stretched and headed out, knowing it was going to just be a shorty today.

I started off strong, breathing right, nice smooth pace, Stones on the iPod, route plotted.  By the time I reached the turn around (really, only a mile), I was staring at the Wall, and it was staring right back – and it was winning the contest.  My quads SCREAMED at me as the sweat streamed down my face, soaking my shirt, and I still had another mile to go.

“How is this possible?”  That was all I could ask myself.  There had to have been a reason!  I rested, avoiding injury, I stretched, I ate right.  Well, the logic of first 5K, work, run, exhaustion, stress…you do the math (but really, it hurt).

I came home and stretched, showered, stretched and have a plan to cross train tomorrow morning.  My legs are still very weary, but I think they’ll be thankful that I’m heading off to bed now.  Anyone have any thoughts?  Ideas?  Suggestions?  I’d love to hear them.
